The Tablet PCs are becoming increasingly popular, and they have become now a more attractive market for various companies, in which to invest is worth. So far, the competitors to the iPad exclusively with hardware made by NVIDIA/Intel are operated. That could change soon, since competitor AMD has said that now that they increasingly want to be represented in the segment of the tablets.
The Senior Director of content and application support for AMD, Neal Robison, said that his group in the not too distant future would also be represented in the area of the Tablet PC. For this first examination procedures have been initiated. Various options and compatibility checks to be taken to determine how the Tablet PC must be structured so that also an AMD processor can be integrated. To include the support to the Android system is checked, but also the Intel/Nokia product Meego is currently tested thoroughly. How Robison stated, it is conceivable that particularly energy-saving "AMD Fusion" models are being developed, on which Google Android works particularly well.
On Meego, the staff expressed rather critical. This system is currently a small light, and before AMD invested in this, it requires a greater market acceptance. The company has interest in the system simply because it is based on Linux. Whether it has a future but is ultimately up to the tablet manufacturer. However, the Meego project in the future seems to be able to go through any progress. Nokia seems to focus soon exclusively on the Windows phone 7 and Meego therefore probably no longer will be further developed.
In addition to the checks with regard to the two operating systems, Robison said that AMD will specialize primarily in Windows. At the end of 1 quarter of 2011, a hybrid product is to be published by Acer. This is a mixture of Tablet PC and notebook and will be equipped with an AMD Fusion APU. It is an energy-saving variant of the C50, however will be promoted under the same name. This dual-core processor has a clock rate of a gigahertz and a power consumption of only 5 watts. Also why AMD preferred the use of Windows on tablets, said Robison. He reported that Windows DirectX support. If appropriate graphics cores are developed, it would be able to play DirectX 10 titles on tablets with Windows.
A new fusion APU which is intended exclusively for smartphones and tablets will be released in 2012. It is a 28-nm chip and listen to the code name "Wichita". It is interesting that competitor Intel would almost at the same time also publish a new atom processor, which is intended for the same area.
